The USS Karnes was a Haskell-class attack transport that saw service at the very end of fighting in the Pacific Theater and in the early stages of the occupation of Japan.  She landed troops in Saipan and Okinawa, and was assigned to Operation Magic Carpet Duty returning discharged soldiers and sailers in late 1945 and 1946.

Barlow was born and raised in Boothbay Harbor and graduated from Gould Academy and Tufts University.  He served in the US Navy during WW2 and was a well known marine artist. He taught art in Salem, MA and moved to Brunswick in 1954 where he taught from 1954 to 1962 at Brunswick High School. He opened his own art gallery and continued making art until about four years ago. He built his own boat from 1969 to 1973, a 34 foot Gaff Rig Ketch. He spent three years on his boat sailing across the Atlantic, around Europe and back to East Boothbay. He and his wife were avid square dancers for over 20 years. They met many friends through their dancing in the communities they visited. He was predeceased by his daughter, Catherine Barlow.
