Emil Shay S?cule? (in Hebrew: ???? ?"? ????????, born 1915, Izvoarele Sucevei - 1976, Rishon Letzion, Israel) was a Romanian and Israeli folklorist and ethnomusicologist, originally from a family of Moldovan Jews, he was also a pianist , conductor, composer and arranger. In Romania and then in Israel, S?cule? distinguished himself through his research in the field of Jewish folk music from Romania.
Biography
Emil S?cule? was born in 1915 at Izvoarele Suceva, then in the Duchy of Bucovina, land of the Crown of Austria (Cisleithania), in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, today in southern Bucovina, in Romania. He studied at schools in Boto?ani. He worked as a musician, composer and teacher at Jewish schools in Boto?ani. In 1935 he settled in Bucharest.[1] He became interested in the musical folklore in the Yiddish language, including that of the Jews of Transnistria.[1] In 1949 he was co-opted into the Romanian Composers' Union.[1] In the 1950s, being appreciated by Harry Brauner, he was co-opted at the Institute of Folklore in Bucharest, in a position related to the research of Jewish music, which, however, was abolished after two years. In 1955 S?cule? was awarded at an international composition competition held in Warsaw on the occasion of the World Youth Festival. He published in Romania and then in Israel a collection of Yiddish folk songs. The press and print censorship service in Romania, which was then under the communist regime, ordered the suspension of the distribution in bookstores of his book published by the Music Publishing House of the Composers' Union, under the pretext that it contained "religious and nationalist songs", and that the writing of the collection it would not have been "scientific". [2][3]. S?cule? has lectured on Jewish folklore in Romania on various occasions, among others, at the State Jewish Theater in Bucharest. In 1961, he was given the opportunity to record at the state record label Electrecord a disc with some popular Jewish songs in the Yiddish language, with the soloists Radu Lucian, Sorina Dan and Cecilia Stein, accompanied by a popular orchestra under his direction.
S?cule? died in 1976 at the age of 61, in the city of Rishon Letzion in Israel.
