Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Apache, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-woven basket crafted from natural plant fibers in hues of light beige and dark brown. The circular vessel features flexible walls as well as a sturdy rim, and the basin is decorated across most surfaces with brown geometric forms. The central checkerboard panel could perhaps represent the barrier between the living and their deceased ancestors, or it could perhaps be a layer of clouds between mortals and gods.
