BRANCH RICKEY SIGNED BLANK CHECK TO MRS. GRACE DUROCHER WITH SOME PERSONAL PAPERS
This lot has a "Branch Rickey" check from the Brooklyn Trust Company, dated July 26, 1943, check No. 185. The blank check was accompanied by a typewritten letter on "Branch Rickey" personal Brooklyn National League Baseball Club letterhead dated July 24th, 1943, with matching Brooklyn envelope, addressed to Mrs. Grace Durocher. It reads "Dear Grace: I don't how much I owe you, and here's my blank check. Please fill it in to cover everything I owe you. As a matter of fact, I can't pay you what I owe you with a check. Sincerely yours, Branch Rickey", with Branch Rickey's handwritten signature.
Durocher was known as a womanizer and gambler, and it is believed that this check was meant to reimburse Grace Durocher for her 'handling' some legal and/or gambling debts, that she paid for personally. It is possible that this 'blank check' was in gratitude to not have the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club deal with these matters publicly or privately.
This lot includes a copy of legal proceedings related to the divorce of Grace and Leo Durocher.
