Early Cobb Island Yellowlegs, Mackey Collection
Cobb Island, Virginia, before 1900, carved and painted wood, ink stamped MACKEY COLLECTION, incised W branded on bottom.
Length 10. 5 in.
This early yellowlegs is attributed to be from the hunting rig of famous Chincoteague shorebird hunter Dan "Squealer" Whealton (1858-1943). Dan was still shooting shorebirds at the age of 82, years after it was outlawed. This decoy has an incised W brand.
