Cincinnati engraver Elijah C. Middleton used a unique method of lithography where he printed on canvas-backed paper in oil-based inks in order to produce color images of unusually high quality that were affordable. Starting around 1861, his chromolithographic portraits often depicted famous figures such as George and Martha Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster and General Grant.
