Description
Saline de L'horloger (the Watchmaker's saltworks) in Malta, by Lemaitre.
Size: 20,2x13,3 cms.
Stuck to cardboard.
Condition: good.
Background: the Watchmaker's saltworks, a bizarre hydraulic phenomenon, of which here is the brief explanation. A Maltese watchmaker, having had the idea of making salt works near Zebug, where he owned land near the shore, had the rock dug to evaporate the salt water; but the sea, having mined below, rushed through this well like a waterspout or like one of those water volcanoes of Iceland, to a height of more than sixty feet, and almost drowned the whole country. The opening was blocked with great difficulty, and from time to time the marine volcano makes attempts to erupt.
