Description
Hispanic bibliography.- Vindel (Pedro, Francisco, José Pedro & Victoria) A Collection of Bibliographic Works by the Vindel Family, including bibliographies and histories with some auction catalogues, all relating to Spain, its component regions and its former colonies in Latin America and the Philippines, many limited editions, some with signed inscriptions by the author, bound variously in handsome calf or morocco with original wrappers bound in or in original wrappers, v.s., 1896-1999 (c.120)*** An excellent archive of Hispanic bibliographic works by Pedro Vindel (1865-1921) and his three children Francisco, Victoria and José Pedro, altogether providing a vital contribution to the history of the book in Spain. Pedro's reputation was established after discovering Martin Codax's musical poem Las siete canciones de amor dating from the 8th century. Francisco (1894-1960), meanwhile, is renowned for his 12 volumes of El arte tipográfico en España durante el siglo XV, the ambitious history of printing in every region of Spain as well as his Manual gráfico descriptivo del bibliófilo hispano-americano, an expansive collection of facsimile title pages of some of the most significant books in the Spanish language - both of which feature here. Almost all the books are scarce, many being printed in limited editions of between 50 and 500 copies, and some signed with inscriptions by the author. Catálogo sistemático é ilustrado de la biblioteca filipina, for instance, is possibly the most important catalogue of Philippines books ever published, while Catálogo de libros preciosos impresos y manuscritos is the rarest title in the archive: its record of two catalogued books making 70,000 pesetas at auction led to the rehauling of the bibliographic history of both works. Archive highlights include:(1). Vindel (Francisco) El Arte Tipográfico en España durante el Siglo XV, 12 vol. in 9, first edition, one of 500 copies, over 3,000 facsimile reproductions, one vol. unopened, variously bound, most with original wrappers bound in, contemporary morocco or morocco-backed cloth, one in modern half calf, another in original wrappers, a few spines lightly faded, a few with thin strips of fading to covers, some small nicks to extremities, otherwise excellent, 4to, Madrid, 1945-51.(2). Vindel (Francisco) Mapas de América y Filipinas en los Libros Españoles de los Siglos XVI al XVIII, 2 vol., first edition, no. 333 of 520 copies, facsimile folding maps, original wrappers bound in, vol.2 in contemporary morocco-backed cloth, spine gilt in compartments with nautical motif, red and green morocco spine labels, fore- and lower edges uncut, vol.1 in contemporary speckled morocco, spine richly gilt in compartments with nautical motifs, spines lightly sunned, extremities very slightly rubbed, folio, Madrid, 1955-59.(3). Vindel (Pedro) Manual Gráfico-Descriptivo del Bibliófilo Hispano-Americano (1475-1850), 12 vol. in 5, first edition, over 3,000 facsimile reproductions, original wrappers bound in, wrappers lightly spotted, contemporary half morocco, spines sunned, 4to, Madrid, 1930-34.(4). Vindel (Pedro) Catálogo de Libros Preciosos Impresos y Manuscritos, first edition, one of 50 copies, facsimile illustrations, many leaves unopened, pencil annotations to list of 114 books giving prices (?possibly at auction), light water-staining to lower corners of a few leaves, original wrappers bound in, modern calf-backed boards, red morocco spine label, fore- and lower edges uncut, 8vo, Madrid, 1911.(5). Vindel (Pedro) Catálogo Sistemático é Ilustrado de la Biblioteca Filipina, 2 vol., first edition, folding facsimile plates, vol.2 with last 11 pp. after p.240 supplied in loose facsimile, light marginal browning, original wrappers bound in, modern calf, uncut, a few light scuff marks, 8vo, Madrid, 1904-05.A full detailed listing of all items in the archive can be found here: http://www.orssich.com/pdfs/cat94.pdf
