Item Details
Description
By the Francis, Field & Francis Company. Philadelphia, Pa. - Circa 1850 - 13" Long. From the collection of Bill Bertoia. Francis, Field and Francis were manufacturers of tin ware and saddlery hardware. They conducted their operations at 80 N. Second Street in Philadelphia as early as 1831. It is believed that they added a line of tin toys beginning in the late 1830's. This horseless dray is a splendid example of their work. In particular, note the complex perforated treatment for the dray's railing and the embossed tin half round hitch at the front. To our knowledge, this is the only existing toy by them that directly references Philadelphia.
