Description
Americas, North America, Southwest, Spanish Colonial period 1739-1856. Large and well made Petaca Chest of strapped raw hide leather over wood with intricate strapping in geometric patterns and squares throughout. The face, front, and sides all feature numerous patterns of strapped leather, trunks such as these were used in the southwest and throughout the Spanish colonial period as traveling trunks and chest on wagon for their strength, durability, and modest weight. There is a wrought iron hook to the interior of the chest although no lock plate to the exterior. 31" L x 12" H
Condition
No apparent restoration in original condition, loose and missing leather to right side with loose straps throughout. Functions well and opens easily. Losses and areas of staining and soiling as seen.
