Artist: KUNISADA, Utagawa (1786-1865)Title: A Ghost scene (from a kabuki play)Series: Former T. Scheiwe collection (red 'TSN' seal at bottom right), see: Hempel, 1972, p. 300, ill. no. 540 (our drawing).Date: 1830s-40sMedium: Preparatory brush drawing for a woodblock print in black ink; with pentimento.Size/Format: c. 10" x 13 3/8"Description: Along the road, a young man with a lance over his shoulder is being attacked by the ghost of a woman who sits in the basket the young man is carrying. Her right arm raised, with a sword in her hands she is about to stab the man. At right we see a tombstone and a small wooden shrine. In the distance to the left, a small bridge crosses a brook. - On a pentimento the artist has made minor corrections to the ghost's posture by redrawing those lines which differ from the original version which is visible through the attached paper (pentimento). Since only the top of the attached paper is fixed to the drawing, we may view the initial version when lifting this paper strip (cf. the two illustrations).Condition: Fine.
