Saul Raskin (1878-1966): American illustrator, painter, printmaker, and critic. Born in Nogaisk, Ukraine, Raskin studied art in Odessa and attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. In 1904 he immigrated to the US.
In the 1930s, Raskin was the art director of the 92nd Street Y in New York. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially of New York's Lower East Side.
Raskin made multiple trips to Palestine, between 1921 and 1947 and later to Israel. During the British mandate, he stayed at the kibbutz Ramat Yochanan. Trips to Palestine generated artworks, many of which were included in the 1947 book, Land of Palestine with hundreds of watercolors, drawings, and etchings of Jewish life in Palestine preceding the Declaration of Independence. Raskin also illustrated Hebrew texts: Pirke Aboth, Haggadah, Psalms, Siddur, Kabbalah, and Hebrew Rhapsody. Raskin’s work exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Brooklyn Museum, and collected by many major museums and galleries.
