Description
50" overall, 6" carved whale bone handle attached to wooden shaft with old, inked accession number, 9" spiral cut whalebone long dished out blade is attached by baleen as is the handle, a sinew cord is run between the whalebone handle and tip, sinew cords attach three carved well patinaed marine ivory accessories to this tool of unknown use to this cataloger. About midway of wood shaft is fossilized ivory tooth with fresh break. The carved whalebone and ivory pieces have rich patinas probably excavated and attached to this shaft possibly for museum display. Accompanying this most interesting tool are a pair of early sinew and wood snowshoes with an old Sotheby’s auction tag. CONDITION: good to very good overall with the noted break to the 1" fossilized ivory tooth. PROVENANCE: Martin Lane Historic & Western Americana Lifetime Collection.
