Description

A George III silver drum teapot John Robins, London 1775 Cylindrical form with bead rims, the sides finely engraved with husk swags and drapery hanging from rings and paterae, with tassel supporting an engraved shield armorial, the lift-off cover engraved with trailing foliage bands and floral sprays, surmounted with wood finial, wood handle and an angular spout, length 21.5cm, diameter 11.4cm, weight total 17.2oz. Footnotes: Provenance: With Mary Cooke Antiques Limited 2014 The Patrick and Mavis Walker Silver Collection These arms were destined for use by the lady of the family. The engraved shield would have been intended for the use of Charlotte WILLYAMS nee TOWNSEND. These are the impaled arms of John Oliver WILLYAMS sometimes WILLIAMS (1731-1809) of St Mawgan, Cornwall and his wife Charlotte TOWNS(H)END (1740-1790) of London. They were married in 1772. John Oliver WILLYAMS was born at Falmouth, Cornwall the son of John WILLIAMS (1701-1784) of Roseworthy and Carnanton, Cornwall by Anne OLIVER (1702-1772) of Falmouth, Cornwall. Charlotte TOWNSEND was the daughter of Chaucey TOWNSEND (1708-1770) Esq. of Christiopher le Stocas, London by Bridget PHIPPS (died 1762) of Westbury, Wiltshire. Her father was a merchant of the City of London, developed coal mines in South Wales and suppling settlers in Nova Scotia. He served as an MP first at Westbury 1748-1768 and Wigtoun Burghs, Scotland 1768-1770.
