Thomas Daniell, R.A. Ramnugur, near Benares, on the River Ganges, hand-coloured aquatint, with 1794 watermark, from part 1 of the series 'Oriental Scenery', [Abbey Travel 420, no. 15], some minor spotting and paper tone, unexamined out of frame, overall 66 x 82cm, Thomas Daniell and Robert Bowyer at the Historic Gallery Pall Mall, 1796. ***Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), and his nephew William Daniell (1769-1837), made a celebrated artistic journey around India and subsequently published a six volume work entitled 'Oriental Scenery'. The Daniells are visible in the scene, seated on the pinnace 'Budgerow' boat. The fortress of Ramnagar, built by Maharaja Balwant Singh, is located on the opposite bank of the Ganges from the holy city of Benares (Varanasi).
