Description
An early relief carved marble sculpture of St. Agnes of Rome holding a lamb (signed "St. Agnes" above base). The half body sculpture is carved into the front section of a square column, probably part of an Italian alter piece, mid 19th century. The carving itself is in very good condition, but there are attachment holes on the sides, top and bottom (see photos). Very finely carved and in good condition. Measures 10 1/2"D x 7 1/2"W x 27"H. Notes: Agnes was a member of the Roman nobility, born in circa AD 291 and raised in an early Christian family. She suffered martyrdom at the age of twelve. She was a beautiful young girl from a wealthy Roman family, and had many suitors of high rank, and the young men, slighted by her resolute devotion to religious purity, submitted her name to the pagan authorities as a follower of Christianity - for this she was to tied to a stake to be burned alive in a public square - according to legend, the wood would not burn, so she was beheaded by one her military captors. Because of the legend surrounding her martyrdom, Saint Agnes was named the patron saint of those seeking chastity and purity. She is also the patron saint of young girls and girl scouts. Provenance: From a Rochester NY estate, name withheld by family.
