The first is a transcription from Auden's final carbon-copy sent to Faber & Faber in 1969. The editor, Edward Mendelson, writes that "The Chase was completed by Auden in 1934. It includes a number of elements from an earlier play by Auden and Isherwood, The Enemies of a Bishop.Although Faber announced the publishing date of the play as 21st March 1935, it was never actually published. After revisions and improvements by Auden and Isherwood it was finally published as The Dog Beneath the Skin, in May 1935. Notes on provenance included.
