Description
A SMALLER 18TH CENTURY CARVED TREEN WOOD SNUFF BOX formed as a portly male, modelled with hands upon his chest, also seated in a squatting stance as if defecating. 12 cm x 6 cm. Note: Snuffboxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th century when snuff-taking was fashionable. Highly decorated and valuable objects, they became collectors' items in the 19th century.
