ITALIAN URBINO MAIOLICA PLAQUE DEPICTING A BATTLE SCENE FROM ROMAN HISTORY
POSSIBLY PAINTED IN THE WORKSHOP OF GUIDO DI MERLINO OR THE WORKSHOP OF FRANCESCO DI SILVANO, CIRCA 1540-45
the surrounding border of this dish has been cut away leaving a central well depicting a scene of battle with a city and a mountainous landscape in the background; the well is mounted within a thin metal band; the battle scene is copied directly from an engraving by Giovanni Giacomo Caraglio (after Raphael) of 1526-27; it probably depicts the Battle of Heraclea between the Romans and the Greeks under the command of Pyrrhus; (restored), unmarked
approximately 30cm diameter
Provenance: Estate of Prof Francis Wormald (1904 - 1972), palaeographer and art historian.Presented to Francis Wormald on his retirement in 1967 from an accompanying list of subscribers. Purchased from ceramics dealer Alfred Spero.
Note: Guido di Merlino, mentioned in Urbino documents between 1523 and 1564*, ran a successful workshop in the 1540s and produced work at this time decorated with Roman History subject matter.
