GEORGE III MAHOGANY HEXAGONAL RENT TABLE, IN THE MANNER OF GILLOWS OF LANCASTER
18TH CENTURY
the hexagonal top with a moulded edge and brown leather insert with gilt embossed border, above six frieze drawers with inlaid ivory tablets numbered 1-6 and original brass handles, the top with full rotating action on internal steel runners and castors; raised on a square cabinet base with cupboards on opposing sides, the panels outlined with moulding with re-entrant corners, resting on a plinth

Note: This form of library table with lettered drawers is also described as a 'rent' table, although this is a term which probably dates from the twentieth century. A manuscript design from Gillows Sketch book of 1792 shows another library table inscribed P. F. Cawthorne Esq., which has a square pedestal base supporting a circular top with drawers and a centered covered well. See Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, vol. I, plate 283. A similar example to the present lot is illustrated in Lanto Synge, Mallett's Great English Furniture, London, 1991, p. 123.
