A GOLD THREAD AND SILK EMBROIDERED THANGKA OF SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA
QING DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY

Against a tranquil celeste-blue background, this intricate embroidered thangka depicts Shakyamuni Buddha at the center, seated in dhyanasana. At four corners are woven images of Manjushri and Tsongkhapa above, and Havagriva and Mahakala below, each seated against colorful rays of lights or flaming mandorlas. The patterns to the Buddha's robe, the garlands of heads on the wrathful deities, and the varied greens throughout the leaves, are well presented here.

At the Qing court and in Tibet, silk embroidered thangkas were among the most revered articles of worship. Their veneration can be traced back to the Yuan and early Ming dynasties, when large-scale imperial examples were sent as gifts to Tibetan monasteries and subsequently used in public ceremonies. Luxurious multicolored silk threads, some wrapped in gold, intertwine to create a heightened visual experience of contrast and texture.

A silk embroidered thangka of Manjushri in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (15.95.154) is attributed 17th-18th century and incorporates a similar multicolor-striped aureole around its central figure as appears behind Manjushri and Tsongkhapa. Also compare a thangka of Green Tara (Series of the Gem of Beijing Cultural Relics: Textiles and Embroidery, 2001, pl. 199), and a thangka of Ekadashamukha Avalokiteshvara (Sotheby's, New York, 10 September 2019, lot 327).
