The Dodge WC range is a series of light military trucks produced by the Dodge Company during the Second World War. The acronym WC is a manufacturer s code meaning W for the year 1941 and C for the Half-ton range. The Type 56 is often referred to as the Command-Car, and around 21,000 were built in this version. Originally intended for reconnaissance, it was quickly snapped up by senior officers, as it was well equipped and comfortable for command use. The example on display is a revolving one, fully restored recently and painted in the colours of a war correspondents unit, the 166 Signal corp seconded to George Patton s 3rd Army, based on period photos taken at Saint Lo and La Haye du Puit in 1944, a way of honouring these ‘soldiers of the image’ so dear to the former owner. This example bears the serial number 81698072, making it an early example from 1943, recognisable at first glance by its small fuel tank neck and its distinctive steering wheel. It has been restored with the utmost attention to detail, the mechanical parts completely overhauled, the sheet metal reworked, the electrical circuit replaced by a very good quality US model, and the headlights and black-out are original US. The rims have been sandblasted and epoxied to facilitate later dismantling. Most of the nuts and bolts have been reassembled with the original fan washers. Many original accessories have been found, including the Dodge-specific fire extinguisher, the wheel lock on the ignition key and the jack. The tarpaulin is provided, a brand new example made by John and Mary for connoisseurs, one of their latest productions, of the highest quality as close as possible to the original. The hoops have been restored, some tubes being badly corroded. A number of Nos parts are supplied. Recent collector s registration document.
