Description
A LARGE CHINESE THREE PART BUDDHIST JAR & COVER, STUPA, TANG DYNASTY (618-907). Complete with its stand and cover, made from quite a high fired pottery. The surface of all three parts has been cold painted in a base coat of a creamy white pigment with lotus leaf and floral patterns added on top in black, bright orange and green pigments, very good traces of which still remain, especially to the jar. Such Stupa jars from this period have been found in the tombs of Buddhist monks as well as tombs connected to Tang dynasty imperial households. Total 48cm tall. Jar on its own 26.5cm tall. Ref: a very similar example was sold by Bonhams, Roger Keverne Ltd Moving On Sale, London, 11th May 2021, lot 61. Provenance: From the collection of the late Brian Page (1938-2018), the well-known Oriental art and antiques dealer from Brighton. Purchased in the 1990s.
Condition
The jar is in good overall condition with no signs of repair to any of the three parts. Chips to both the stand and the cover.
