Description
Sir William George Gillies CBE LLD RSA PPRSW RA (British, 1898-1973)
Dax
inscribed and signed 'DAX GILLIES' (lower right), dated '1927' (lower left)
oil on board
61 x 91.5cm (24 x 36in).
Footnotes:
Provenance
Private collection, UK.
Dax is a spa town in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, southwest France. This large composition was made during the second of Gillies' three recorded trips to France, in 1927. Watercolours of Gillies' visit to Dax exits (see RSA G.1991.775) but the present painting is the only known oil, which was probably painted after Gillies returned to Scotland. Although we know this scene is 'Dax', there are strong similarities with a view of Nungate Bridge in Gillies' hometown of Haddington.
