Description
An antique Chinese silk booklet. Qing dynasty, Qianlong era, 18th century. The booklet consists of ink and watercolor paintings of porcelain vases and calligraphy by Lang Shining, each spread with artist signature and mark. The book comes in a presentation box. Giuseppe Castiglione, also known as Lang Shining, 1688 to 1766, was an Italian painter and member of the Jesuit society. In China, where Castiglione went by the Chinese name Lang Shining, he came to the attention of the Qianlong emperor and served as an artist for the court. Following the taste and tradition of painting in China, Castiglione was able to forge a new style that combined elements with his Western training in art.
