Item Details
Description
NOT ELIGIBLE FOR IN-HOUSE SHIPPING. DESCRIPTION: 17th century Easter Season book of vespers, or incunabula, from Marbella, Spain. Printed on vellum in traditional black and red inks for words and actions. Large, plain, bold text so the full cathedral could see and follow the service from further distances. Spanish cathedrals were often dark and lit by candlelight, and since vespers were evening prayers the lack of daylight also made seeing the liturgical book difficult. Written in Medieval or Middle Latin; this is a dialect of Vulgar Latin which provided the roots for the earliest form of Spanish that was being spoken on the Iberian peninsula. Follows the Vulgate numbering of the Psalms. Does not have musical notation, however, does have instruction for call and response and has notation for where a hymn would be sung or chanted. Leather bound. In original shipping crate with original shipping tags. Please contact info@cordierauction.com to request additional photos. MEASUREMENTS: 26-3/4" long x 18-3/4" wide x 5-5/8" high. PROVENANCE: The consignor's mother-in-law's brother was a world-traveling antique dealer. He purchased the book in Marbella, Spain in the 1940's or 1950's. The mother-in-law gave the book to the consignor as her husband is a chaplain. It has stayed in its original shipping container since being brought to the US from Spain. It had only been opened a handful of times before being consigned. CONDITION: Previous conservation present in page supports. Some areas of re-printing or hand writing of text when parts of pages were lost. First page missing. Tears, losses, pest damage as expected with age. Very good condition for its age.
