Description
A Russian Champlevé Enameled Gilt Silver Three-Piece Coffee Service for Tiffany & Co. Antip Kuzmichev, Moscow, 1899-1908, with retailer's mark of Tiffany & Co. 6-7/8 x 6-5/8 x 4-1/8 inches (17.5 x 16.8 x 10.5 cm) (tallest, coffee pot) 954 grams (gross) PROVENANCE: Ruth S. Nelkin acquired this set on January 31, 1980 at a cost of $23,000. In the 1880s, Russian enamels experienced a vogue in New York. American collectors were enthralled by the exotic Slavic designs which seemed tailor-made for the sumptuous late Victorian interiors then in style. Tiffany, Gorham, and others imported works by Russian makers such as Ovchinnikov, Khlebnikov, Kuzmichev and Grachev for eager American clients, and pieces with both Russian and American marks are quite rare.
