Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A pretty pottery bowl of fascinating form, with walls that expand outwards to create a 4-lobed shape and an inward curving rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. Decorated via 3 stages of resist, the exterior boasts a nested, geometric pattern of square and steppe motifs in hues of russet, black, and cream. Chupicuaro ceramics are known for their strength in patterning as well as the integrity of the ceramic itself. This mesmerizing decoration may have once held deep symbolic significance. Size: 7" Diameter x 3.7" H (17.8 cm x 9.4 cm)

Condition
Light surface wear as shown, but otherwise intact and excellent with great preservation of pigments and detail. Nice root marks on underside of base. Accompanied by old Heritage Auctions collection label.
