Nigeria, Ibibio Peoples, Polychrome Carved Wood Mask (Idiok Ekpo), H 13", W 8", D 6" | Raised Vertical Designs Along Middle of Forehead And Both Sides of the Eyes. Protruding Jaw with Raised Teeth. Top of Mask Appears to Be in the Form of a Cap. Idiok Ekpo Masks Feature Rough, Ugly Features And Are Usually Painted Dark Colors to Represent Someone Who Committed Evil Deeds in Life And Has Become a Ghost in Death. Seven Holes Pierced Along Each Side of the Mask, Fourteen in Total. Possibly for Additional Adornments That Were Once Attached to Mask. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Township, MI private collection.
Condition
Crack down figure's nose through to the chin, running through the lips. Small gouge just above right eyebrow. Areas of wear at tip of nose and chin.
