Description
Artist: Everett Shinn (1876-1953) Oil on canvasMeasures: 50 x 70 cmSigned: lower right edge.Private Collection Biography: American painter born in Woodstown (New York) in 1876 and died in 1953. He was the youngest member of the "The Eight" group, and the best and most well-known for his theatrical and New York street scenes. He was also an illustrator and muralist. He played an important role in American art and his pastels of exceptional New York street scenes stretched from Park Avenue to the Bowery. His experience as a reporter and artist provided him with great technical resources that he later practiced as an illustrator for magazines such as McClure's, Hearsts International, Everybody's and The Century. Everett's career as an illustrator, however, was sporadic. He accepted contracts only when it suited him, mainly when he needed money. When he refused to work as an illustrator for one of these print media, he would pursue his other pictorial interests, sometimes for years, before returning to illustration.Part of the charm of his illustrations lies in a kind of casual insouciance, as if he couldn't take himself too seriously. He also painted several murals such as the one he did for the Trenton City Hall, in New Jersey. One of the main themes of Everett's painting was the theater. His interest in the stage grew from his adolescent fascination with the circus. He often staged theatrical scenes in his studio with the help of friends and fellow artists. He also captured the vibrant Parisian life at theater nights, a city he visited between 1901 and 1902.Shinn's work is in the collections of important museums, such as the New York Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, or the Phillips Memorial Gallery in Washington.
