Lev Felixowitsch Lagorio (Russian, 1826-1905) Oil on Canvas - signed lower right. Coastal Scene with Figures and Boat. Possibly South Crimea Coast. Canvas measures 17.5x23 in gilt frame to overall size of 23x29. Lew Felixowitsch Lagorio was born in Feodosia in the Crimea, Lagorio. He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art with Maxim Vorobyov and Gotfrid Pavlovich Villeval'defrom 1843 to 1850. In his early work, he was influenced by the seascapes of the most famous Russian marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, who also lived in the Crimea. Lagorio took part in theCaucasian War, painting coastal and mountain landscapes. From 1852, he studied for several years in Italy. In his later works, he painted mainly coastal landscapes in Finland and Norway, as well as scenes from the Russian-Turkish war. Promoted by the Tsar, he was awarded with several gold and silver medals of the Academy of Arts. Works by Lagorio can be found in many Russian museums, including the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Museum of Russian Art in Kiev, and the Municipal Museum in Riga. Condition: Very Fine
