In 1925, Dean Cornwell visited the Holy Land and created several paintings, which were eventually used for various books and stories with Middle East and Biblical themes. The present lot was illustrated in the sixth of a series of articles about paintings of places in the Holy Land published by Good Housekeeping Magazine in 1926. The article was written by William Lyon Phelps to describe Christ entering Jerusalem through the famed gate on Palm Sunday.
