Jean Calogero (Italian, 1922-2001), Young Girl Ironing
oil on canvas, signed at lower right, retaining French label en verso of frame, presented in a carved wood frame.
Stretcher size 22 x 15 in. Frame dimensions 23 1/4 x 30 in.
Jean Calogero is known for his surrealist genre paintings created through his memory. He exhibited in Sicily and Rome in 1945 before moving to Paris in 1947 to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Throughout the 50s and 60s, he exhibited widely in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Japan, and Italy. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957.
