Description


PROVENANCE: Herbert Patrick (1936-2018) Atlanta, Georgia.He attended Boys Central high school, which he played center for the 1952 Central High School State A champions football team.Herb started his career in the appliance business and was employed with his uncle Tom Kirby appliance until 1971, then he opened his own business Herberts appliances. He was part of the uptown business community for over 49 years. His fascination for antiques came the memories of items that he remembered in his parents and grandparents home. Many of the items in his estate have been passed down from previous generations.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Wucai dragon motif porcelain garlic vase. Potted in garlic bottle vase, bulbous lower belly, thick, with rounded shoulder, long cylindrical neck, with shrink on the neck middle to enlarge onion head shape, with slight short mouth rim, raised on short small round, with slight concaved foot base. The exterior hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white under glazed base color which contrast against wucai design, WuCai or five-color shades and tones, brightly painted around the exterior, between the filling motif decorated in colorful vivid ground of uptala, depicted of snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through flowers blooms and interlocking tendril in a vivid tones color dragon squama to chasing flaming pearl. Interlocking tendril and auspicious ornament decorated on the collar and floral shaped large pendants filled by scrolling clouds on the garlic head. The colors are harmonious, balanced, elegant and exquisite, the composition is sophisticated, simply a feast for the eye. The glaze is seamless and gives off a beautiful luster, with the colors maintaining excellent vibrancy. The underside rim left unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground and dark grayish brown spotted firing marks with edge-cut foot rim. Mark on base, a two columns vertical six under glazed script characters reign mark, Made In The Years Wanli Reign Period of Great Ming Dynasty.
