Footnote:
Upon his arrival in 1766, his previous attempts as a member of the British Parliament, to enforce the 1765 Stamp Act made him rather unpopular with the local colonials as governor.

During the American Revolutionary War however Montagu began recruiting American prisoners for the Duke of Cumberland's Regiment (Charleston, South Carolina) to fight for the British war with Spanish forces, who were on the colonists side. Charles was captured recruiting soldiers on British prison ships in New York but was released by General Nathanael Greene. Charles even tried to convince American General William Moultrie to join his regiment, but failed. Charles and his recruits made up the Duke of Cumberland's army regiment, and the outfit was discharged in 1783.
Condition
Both framed 34 x 32 in. (87 x 81 cm.) in heavy corrugated backed metal with brass cornered frames under glass. Considerable overall fade, age toning, foxing, staining and some ink loss to both especially heavy at crease lines. Not inspected out of frames.
