Description
Two framed British indentures with seals
18th century
Lot includes two framed documents: 1. A hand penned document dated January, 1706 / 7 in Latin under the Reign of Queen Anne (1665-1714) pertaining to the era of Spanish War of Succession (1701–1714), The Grand Alliance, and the then acting Ambassador (1706-1708) to the Serene Republic of Venice Charles Edward Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester, as he was sent to Venice on various charges, as well as to try to convince the Venetian Republic to join the Grand Alliance against Spain. The document is lined and penned on vellum parchment and bears on braided chord the large wax Royal seal of Queen Anne.
2. A hand penned document in English under the reign of King George III, dated 5th of February, 1766 ( sixth year of our Reign); pertains to the powers at sea and to the appointment of Lord Charles Greville Montagu (second son of the 3rd Duke of Manchester) as the Royal Governor of the Province of South Carolina (1766-1773). The document is lined in red ink and penned in black on vellum parchment with intricately engraved wide header and side borders, and bears on braided chord the large wax Royal seal of King George III.
largest 24 x 29in (61 x 74cm)
Footnote:
Upon his arrival in 1766, his previous attempts as a member of the British Parliament, to enforce the 1765 Stamp Act made him rather unpopular with the local colonials as governor.
During the American Revolutionary War however Montagu began recruiting American prisoners for the Duke of Cumberland's Regiment (Charleston, South Carolina) to fight for the British war with Spanish forces, who were on the colonists side. Charles was captured recruiting soldiers on British prison ships in New York but was released by General Nathanael Greene. Charles even tried to convince American General William Moultrie to join his regiment, but failed. Charles and his recruits made up the Duke of Cumberland's army regiment, and the outfit was discharged in 1783.
