Description
MELVILLE, HERMAN and ROCKWELL KENT
Moby Dick; or The Whale. Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. First Kent edition, one of 1000 unnumbered copies. Three volumes, publisher's original black beveled cloth, the covers and spines lettered and stamped in silver. 11 1/8 x 8 1/2 inches (29.25 x 21 cm); with 280 full and partial page illustrations after Kent. The spines lightly faded, without the aluminum slipcase, the covers with a few spots of rubbing and a faded patch on the upper cover of volume III, internally an uncut and unopened copy, in all a pleasing though by no means immaculate set.
This was the first illustrated edition of Moby Dick, and is the magnum opus of Rockwell Kent's illustrated oeuvre. The Artist and the Book 140.
