Description
A Monograph of the Lories, or Brush-Tongued Parrots, Composing the Family Loriidae. London: R. H. Porter, 1896. First edition. Modern cloth. 12 1/2 x 10 inches (32 x 25 cm); with 61 hand-colored lithographed plates by J. G. Keulemans, 4 maps, 19 anatomical figures in the text, liii, 193 pp. Title with ink signature in margin and some staining to right extremity, tear to one map.
Mivart's monograph on parrots offer beautiful plates which are considered some of Keulemans' best work. Of the 75 disctint species known at the time, 16 are here described for the first time. Mivart notes that "the family is remarkable for its brilliancy and gay coloration" and that parrots are friendly, noting they "will spontaneously approach human dwellings, and most of them make excellent pets." The plates are notable for their deeply colored backgrounds and were noted by Wood for their beauty. The maps show the distribution of parrots across Australia and the South Pacific Islands. Fine Bird Books, p. 94; Nissen IVB 640; Wood 468; Zimmer, p. 439
