Item Details
Description
Important pair of antique Austrian SCHUTZ CILLI Porcelain chargers in solid bronze round frames. Each porcelain plate measures 14 inches in diameter and the solid bronze round frames measure 18 1/2 inches in diameter. Impressed Schutz-Cilli mark on verso. Each plate bares the Hall mark JL 1892 Schutz Cilli of Austria in Europe. One plate bares the name of Doctor Faustus and the other Mephistopheles. The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, commonly referred to simply as Doctor Faustus, is an Elizabethan tragedy by Christopher Marlowe, based on German stories about the title character Faust. It was probably written in 1592 or 1593, shortly before Marlowe's death. Two different versions of the play were published in the Jacobean era several years later. The Admiral's Men performed the play 24 times in the three years between October 1594 and October 1597. On 22 November 1602, the diary of Philip Henslowe recorded a £4 payment to Samuel Rowley and William Bird for additions to the play, which suggests a revival soon after that date.Mephistopheles, also known as Mephisto, is a demon in German folklore and the messenger of the Devil. He first appeared in literature in the Faust legend, where he is the demon to whom Faust sells his soul. Mephistopheles is the King of the Crossroad Demons and is said to corrupt mortals who make Faustian bargains. The name Mephistopheles may have been invented for the historical Johann Georg Faust (1480–1540) by the anonymous author of the first Faustbuch in 1587. Made from a porcelain paste that is created on site and matures for up to three months in the cellars of the manufacturer.
