'Born in Hungary, Bisttram had studied at New York's leading art academies and in Mexico with muralist Diego Rivera before moving to Taos, New Mexico, in the 1930s and shifting from realism to abstraction. His shapes and patterns may subtly reference designs he admired in the art of the Native American Pueblo communities, blending cultures and traditions in his pursuit of truth and purity in art.'
