Helen Hayes MacArthur (1900 –1993) was an American actress whose career spanned eighty-two years. Hayes, First Lady of American Theatre, was the 2nd person and 1st woman to have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. She was the first person to win the Triple Crown of Acting. In 1986, Hayes received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Ronald Reagan, and, in 1988, the National Medal of Arts. In 1955, the Fulton Theatre on 46th Street in New York City was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre. Hayes is regarded as one of the greatest leading ladies of the 20th-century theatre.
