Frederic Warde (1894 - 1939) was a book designer, editor, and typography designer.William Edwin Rudge II (1876–1931) was a printing house owner which in 1920s produced some of the finest American printing from its presses in Brooklyn and Mount Vernon.

Francois-Marie Arouet De Voltaire (1694 - 1778) was a leader of the Enlightenment. Perhaps his best known works are Candide (1759) and Philosophical Dictionary, usually dated 1764. His ideas influenced the American and French Revolutions, though he did not live to see the culmination of either.

James Boswell (1740 - 1795), Scottish biographer, diarist, and lawyer, born in Edinburgh visited Ferney, the home of Voltaire on December 24, 1764 with an introductory letter from Constant d ' Hermenches. Boswell met Voltaire, and stayed in Ferney for two nights. They discussed Scotland, Lord Kames, Berlin and David Hume and other subjects, which Boswell meticulously reported in his journal and in a long letter to Temple. The letter from Voltaire was written to Boswell by his request to confirm their meetings and dialogs.
