Item Details
Description
Susan Grisell, American, Oil Painting on Board New York City Street Scene, Signed, Framed.

size: 10 x 8, 13.75 x 11.75 outside frame. ASKart: Susan Grisell was born in New Milford, CT in 1946. She grew up in her Grandparent's home in Gaylorsville, CT with a sister and a brother. Her father was a WWII veteran. Susan attended school in New Milford, graduating in 1964 and never left pastoral Litchfield County, western Connecticut along the Housatonic River, where she found constant inspiration in the surrounding natural beauty. Her only family connection to art is a great-uncle (Zimmerman), a sculptor in Germany, who fell to his death from a scaffold while working on a church, and a distant cousinship to William Merritt Chase. At age 13, she declared "I would become an artist."Much of her artistic influence came from her friend and colleague, the impressionist Bernard Lennon, with whom she studied until his death in 1992. She recalls "In my teens I watched him paint - just watched - but that was how I started to learn." Both Lennon and Grissell shunned what was popular in art and painted what they wanted. Commercial success was not a driving force - they painted for the love of it.Susan describes herself as a "garden-variety painter of mostly landscapes". Mostly landscapes, yes, but garden-variety she certainly is not. Susan's landscapes evoke the feelings of peace and tranquility of the Barbizon impressionists with the power that forbids an uncritical casual look that is so common in the works of contemporary artists. She is completely self-trained relying on a personal sense of aesthetics to produce works of great beauty. She works directly from nature - en plain air.Susan works largely in oil, acrylic and pastel, usually in small formats. In the early 2000s, Susan traveled to New York City, California and New Mexico and to Europe (Venice and Paris) where she found new inspiration for subject matter and produced masterly cityscapes.Susan has won numerous honors including: Best in Show, Mystic and New Milford annual shows; First Prize in oil, Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, New York.
