Description
BENNER Paul(1877 - 29.03.1953). Organist from Neuchâtel. He was director of the Neuchâtel Choral Society for 40 years. He composed a "Te Deum" to celebrate the Armistice of 8 May 1945. A friend of Abbé Joseph Bovet, he learned to play the violin with Ladislas Gorski, who called him Carlo. In 1912, he played as a soloist at the Kursaal in Montreux under Ernest Ansermet. He left for Paris, but a cramp in his left hand forced him to change his career. He studied composition and won the first prize for conducting. He returned to Switzerland and conducted various choirs. He was one of the last singers in French-speaking Switzerland to set to music texts about the family, country and religious traditions, and trades that had become outdated. Returned to Switzerland in 1892 where he studied organ, composition and orchestration. He was director of the Geneva Conservatoire from 1925 to 1957. In 1939, he founded the Geneva International Music Competition (CIEMG) and was its first president. JAQUES-DALCROZE Emile(Vienna, 06.07.1865 - 01.07.1950). Geneva musician and educator who developed eurythmy, which links music and movement. He was initially a teacher at the Geneva Conservatoire, where he taught harmony and music theory. After completing a commercial apprenticeship and working in a Neuchâtel bank, he studied music in Frankfurt am Main, Vienna and Paris. On his return to Switzerland, he taught in Neuchâtel. He was bandmaster of the 2. division in 1916. Member of the GEFA board from 1926 to 1935. He composed the music for the "Oratorio of Saul of Tarsus" written by Paul Langer. He was appointed director of the Ecole Sociale de Musique, a post he held until 1966.
