Provenance

The Nanking Cargo Chinese Export Porcelain and Gold; Christie's Amsterdam, 28 April - 2 May 1986, lots 1730, 1731, 1740, 1742 and others (all part).
Lot Essay

On 3rd January 1752, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship named the Geldermalsen, struck a reef on her return journey to the Netherlands and sank in the South China Sea. The cargo included porcelain, silk, tea, lacquered wares and textiles. The wreck was discovered by Captain Michael Hatcher in 1985 and amongst the cargo was a large quantity of Chinese porcelain, which was originally potted in Jingdezhen, in the Jiangxi province of China. The salvaged cargo was subsequently sold by Christie's Amsterdam in ‘The Nanking Cargo, Chinese Export Porcelain and Gold’ on 28 April - 2 May 1986.
