The circular top with moulded edge above a spirally fluted shaft with acanthus base on outscrolled guillauche carved and foliate clasped legs terminating in rosettes
28 in. (71.5 cm.) high; 24 in. (61 cm.) diameter
Lot Essay
This elegant tripod table with its finely carved base and interesting inward scrolling feet belongs to a small body of tables and jardinieres bridging the gap between Kentian and neoclassical forms. With bold acanthus leaf carving and beautiful spirally-reeded shaft this table is very closely related to a kettle stand illustrated R.W. Symonds, Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks, London, 1940 as well as to a tripod table formerly in the Percival Griffiths collection, illustrated C. Jussel & W. DeGregorio, English Furniture 1680-1760; The Percival D. Griffiths Collection, 2023, fig. 187.
The table is also related (with the exception of the stretcher and moulded edge to the top) to one in the Gerstenfeld Collection and illustrated E Lennox Boyd,ed., Masterpieces of English Furniture: The Gerstenfeld Collection, London, London 1998, p. 200, fig. 18. A jardinière with carved base of this design is also illustrated in Synge, Mallett's, p. 112, fig. 125. It was sold from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, Sotheby's New York, 16-17 October 1987, lot 167, and again 11 October 1996, lot 344.
