An important and influential work on furniture design, directly competing with Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director. Berlin Kat. 1229; ESTC T128516.

Folio (356 x 250mm). Engraved title-page in French, and 55 (of 101) plates only, of which 6 are cut down and mounted on stubs (lacking the English title, all the text, and 46 plates, the French title cut-down and mounted on a stub with loss to inner margin and left-hand side of image, some plates cropped close into plate mark and touching a few captions and plate numbers, lightly browned and soiled throughout). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards (rebacked preserving original spine, headcap chipped and foot of spine defective, extremities rubbed, corners heavily). Provenance: N.I. Bienenstock Library (bookplate and stamps). Sold not subject to return.
