Biologist.- Carpenter (William Benjamin, biologist and university administrator, 1813-85) 9 Autograph Letters signed to a variety of people, together 22pp., 8vo, University of London Burlington House & elsewhere, 1st February 1845 - 9th April 1885, including 1 ALs to "Mrs Brookfield" [Jane Octavia Brookfield, a close friend of Thackeray], "I wish your kind congratulations had some better foundation. My salary remains as it has been for the last 5 or 6 years... I told the Senate that I should never expect more but that time might come when I might ask for less work... . We are promised possession of our New Building in May, and I shall there exchange my miserable den for a magnificent apartment... ", folds, 2 removed from an album (9).*** Jane Octavia Brookfield (1821-96), literary hostess and writer; chiefly remembered for her association with the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray.
