Trained as a colonial infantryman at Saint-Cyr. From 1932 to 1936 he served in the Far East, then in Chad. He took Brazaville in 1940. He fought in Eritrea, then Syria. Wounded, he had to have his right leg amputated. In 1942, de Gaulle called him to London, then Algiers.
