Description
Studied law, science and philosophy in Bourges. He took part in the Picardy campaign in 1636. On 16 May 1643, five days after the death of King Louis XIII, he succeeded in crushing the formidable Spanish infantry. This victory was to be his crowning glory. He had a very aggressive conception of war: it was not a question of winning, but of destroying. In 1648, he defeated Leopold II's army at Lens, which led to the Treaty of Westphalia. In 1649, he crushed the Fronde du Parlement at Charenton. However, in 1654, he was sentenced to death following the Fronde des Princes. In 1667, he regained the king's favour. In 1674, he forced the Austrian general Montecuccoli to cross the Rhine again after the siege of Haguenau. This was his last victory.Letter signed and dated Paris, 23.01.1677 to the ÒBailli of Gex: ÒLe colonel Stoppe doitÉenvoyer des officiers dans le pays de Gex pour y faire des levŽes de soldatsÉet le prie dÕaider ceux-ci pour quÕils puissent rŽussirÉÓ.
